Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate how a teaching program on lifestyle modification would affect the health behavior and physiological parameters of patients with coronary disease.

Method: The study design was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The participants were 106 patients of whom, 52 were assigned to the experimental group and 54 to the control. The doctor, nurse, and dietitian individualized the Lifestyle Modification Teaching Program for patients in the experimental group according to hospitalization and out-patient treatment periods. The patients in the study were from K university hospital in Seoul. The period of the study was Jan 2006 to Jan 2007. Data were obtained from 25 health behavior questions and physiological parameters, low density cholestrol(LDL) and In-stent restenosis(ISR).

Results: Health behavior compliance in the experimental group increased significantly(t=4.99, p=.000) compared to the control group. With regard to physiological parameters, LDL(t=3.18, p=.002) and ISR(¥ö2=5.279, p=.033) in the experimental group decreased significantly when compared to the control group.

Conclusions: The above findings indicate that the lifestyle modification teaching program was effective in increasing health behavior scores and improving physiological parameters.
